In yet another collaboration with our friends at Moontower VFX, Foxtrot X-Ray contributed 25+ VFX shots to Bomani J. Story’s film The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster, a riff on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein that “tells the story of teenage anti-hero Vicaria, who is on a desperate quest to cure death.” (IMDb)
Seen above is one of the machete-replacement shots provided by Foxtrot X-Ray for The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster. This entailed removing a set-safe rubber machete prop and replacing it with a CG machete, along with extra blood and gore effects. In addition to maintaining safety on set, these shots were effective in enhancing the violence displayed in such an intense and critical scene. Foxtrot X-Ray also created several shots of electricity being channeled to the main character’s Frankenstein lab. This was done by combining many lightning bolt and electrical spark elements to create a sequence of volatile, high-energy shots. This was supported by other shots of lights violently flickering, also achieved with VFX. More shots included replacing a large mural and the side of a building and gunfire.
Using VFX to create gunfire is an effective way to maintain safety during production. To learn more about firearms safety on film sets, listen to Paul DeNigris discuss firearms and VFX with multiple filmmakers on the VFX for Indies podcast.
