Based on the story of renowned butterfly expert Robert Pyle (David Cross) who embarked on a life-changing trek through one of America's most important unprotected wildlands in the summer of 1995. (IMDb)
Starring David Cross and Debra Messing, and based on a best-selling memoir, The Dark Divide features invisible VFX work by the team at Foxtrot X-Ray. VFX was used to replace a mountain which appears throughout the film, as well as other scenic enhancements. This was important to establish a consistent sense of place over the course of Robert Pyle’s journey. Using VFX to replace signs along the trails was also useful in communicating important information to the audience. When Robert Pyle enters logging territory, VFX was used to add clearcuts in the forest. Foxtrot X-Ray also did extensive digital makeup work to clean up Debra Messing’s bald caps and wigs. Additional effects included tattoo removal, dust effects, and adding artwork. VFX was also used to create gunfire in one scene.
Using VFX to create gunfire is an effective way to maintain safety during production. To learn more about firearms safety on film sets, listen to Paul DeNigris discuss firearms and VFX with multiple filmmakers on the VFX for Indies podcast.
And on another episode of the podcast, Paul and The Dark Divide director Tom Putnam do a deep dive into the VFX for this film as well as look back at Tom’s career.
